  • Anna Gelormini, grade 11, "RBG," acrylic, 16x12 in. This portrait depicts the late Supreme Court justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg whose career was spent fighting for gender equality and women's rights. Here, Ginsburg is shown wearing one of her signature lace collars. Behind her stands a crowd of women, many of whom are holding signs, representing the legacy left by Ruth Bader Ginsburg and the future that legacy has helped carve for many American women.

  • Brooke Bean, grade 3, "Relief Sculpture," crayon & glue on paper, 9x12 in. Brooke used analogous colors, or colors next to each other on the wheel, to help create her sculpture. After carefully coloring both sides of her paper, Brooke cut, folded, frayed, twisted, and curled her paper. She then carefully arranged and attached each of her pieces to a base paper to make her relief sculpture. I'm so proud of Brooke for her beautiful work. This project took time and patience. It's evident Brooke took her time to create such a well crafted piece.

  • Emery Swirbalus, grade 12, "Sir Chloe, Bleach," digital print, 13x9 in. The art of the album cover has been somewhat replaced recently by stand-alone graphics for downloadable mp3 files. Through creating a never-released album for an artist, students learn the history of album cover art in a real, hands-on way through digital design. Emery's work shows an investigative and experimental process, beginning as sketches and sculpture, photographed and then edited in Photoshop to create a provocative image that visually communicates the feeling of the music.

  • Ainsley Douglas, kindergarten, "Tissue Paper Collage," tissue/cut paper, 9x12 in. A collage is a creative arrangement of materials. Materials can range from paper to photographs to fabric. Using tissue paper, students created colorful arrangements and then covered their collages with a piece of construction paper with cut out shapes mimicking a "stained glass" look. Ainsley embraces the color creation in her choices of tissue paper colors to collage. What really gives the artwork "personality" are the shapes Ainsley cut out from the construction paper.

  • Molly Cragan, grade 6, "Trees," watercolor, 16x12 in. Creating distance in watercolor through the application of layers was the idea behind watercolor use. Molly waited for some layers to dry before applying new color. Here, we see distance in Molly's work as the background appears misty which is very realistic and almost looks photographic.

  • William Sroka, grade 2, "Van Gogh Inspired Sunflower," oil pastel on paper, 9x12 in. Second graders learned about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. They were asked to create a drawing inspired by the style of the Dutch painter. First we practiced the shape of an ellipse and vase. Once comfortable with the shapes, students were asked to use oil pastels to create sunflowers inside their vessels. William took a few weeks to carefully craft his artwork. I was so impressed that he took his time to beautifully shade and blend oil pastels together. Nice job!

They included overlaps allowing areas to dry first before applying another color. Ben has included color combinations along with patterned areas that give him information for future artwork using watercolors.

  • Yara Chahine, grade 8, "Waving to Each Other," transparency marker, 16x20 in. Students did figure drawing sketches with pencil and paper. Afterwards, they used a transparency to copy some of the figure drawings. This allowed them to invent motion or repeat a figure in another place on the transparency. Here, Yara decided to create moving hands along with a scene that acknowledges others when passing ... by waving.
