  • Gabrielle Zehme, grade 12, "Flora," collage, 11x14 in. In this lovely self-portrait Gabby interprets her visage through collaged floral images. She plays with scale, color, and placement of elements to develop a spirited, yet gentle portrait.

  • Nora Chafouk, grade 1, "Flowers in a Vase," tempera & oil pastel, 9x12 in. Celebrating Van Gogh's birthday, students painted their own flowers in a vase. These flowers in a vase are called a "still life." Artists used still life arrangements to improve their skills in observation. That being said, the project was simple. Paint a vase full of flowers on a table. Nora has done a tremendous job in creating a vase that looks three-dimensional with a simple arrangement of white flowers, using shading and highlight techniques with oil pastels.

  • Mosbah Tayara, grade 10, "Green Day," digital print, 13x19 in. Students were asked to create an original design for an unmade album of music by an artist. By combining their own photos and artwork (even the lettering was done by hand) through the tools in Photoshop and Illustrator, students explore the art of the album cover. Mosbah's work presents an original and cohesive use of the language of graphic design through his use of layering original imagery, vector-based drawing, and textural overlays.

  • Luke Murphy, grade 11, "Haunted," digital print, 13x19 in. Students were asked "what haunts you?" and to write a paragraph addressing this idea and make 5 photos that visually communicated their response. Luke's work confronts this inner voice, expressing feelings of failure, self doubt, and a drive to defeat his own fears through long exposure photography.

  • Theo Papadinoff, grade 9, "Layered Portrait," digital photo, 8x10 in. Photo I artists learn from experimentation and play with Adobe editing software. In this photo, Theo has layered photos to create a wistful portrait that records a specific time and place.

  • Moira Kay, grade 9, "Layered Portrait, Covered," digital print, 5x7 in. Students in Photo 2 explore the technique of layered imagery to give a sense of time and movement to their work. In this photo, Moira is exploring this idea through portraiture. Her work expresses the feeling of disconnectedness we are all feeling this past year as we withdraw into our own selves.

  • Colin Lynch, kindergarten, "Mandala," crayons, 8x8 in. Mandalas are concentric, geometric representations of one's "universe." Starting from the center, students created colorful designs based on their favorite colors, or shapes they like. What makes Colin's work stand out is his attention to detail and balance throughout his work, which are key elements, or philosophies, in how mandalas are created.

  • Grace O'Donnell, grade 12, "Mary A La Mode," mixed media, 18x14 in. In this thoughtful portrait, Grace considers the elevation of fashion icons to false idols in contemporary society. She uses ink to gently stipple the face of a haloed woman and then engulfs her in a sea of swirling logos.

  • Sara Sahr, grade 6, "Medfield Town Hall," watercolor, 13x19 in. Students look at art work created by Dennis Miller Bunker, a Medfield artist, as well as other regional artists that lived around Medfield. Sara has recreated the Medfield Town House in describing what Medfield looks like today.

  • Owen Aronowitz, grade 3, "Monet Inspired Landscape," oil pastel on paper, 9x12 in. Third graders created oil pastel drawings in the style of Claude Monet. We discussed the life and work of the French impressionist painter. Students were then asked to create a drawing that felt like "plain air" or as if they were working outside. Owen did a fantastic job creating his outdoor space. His use of blending cool colors in the sky creates a dark and stormy mood in the atmosphere. Owen's work is a great example of exploring and appreciating materials.

  • Marjorie Newberg, grade 4, "Mountain Glory," 9x12 in. For this assignment students were given the challenge to create the illusion of distance in a work. Marjorie organized her composition by showing careful attention to the size of the objects and their positioning on the page.

  • Claire Saulnier, grade 5, "Mr. Wolf's Class," 9x12 in. For this assignment students were asked to visually tell a story. Claire found her inspiration by looking at work from author and illustrator Aron Nels Steinke. She borrowed existing characters to create a sequel to her favorite book series Mr. Wolf's Class. Claire paid careful attention to the point of view shown in each frame.

  • Matthew Chi, grade 11, "Museum Self-Portrait," digital print, 13x19 in. Students were asked to 'build' self portraits in Adobe's Illustrator vector drawing program. They were given. list of items to include, such as a museum label, wall texture, and ornate frame. Matthew's work is not only a highly skilled use of the tools, but a rich portrait of the artist's potential, his creativity, dreams and hopes for the future.

  • Maverick Fox, grade 3, "Observational Drawing," pencil & crayon on paper, 9x12 in. Third grade students were asked to draw from observation. We studied values and practiced using our pencils to shade in order to make objects look three dimensional. Maverick's observation is a true sign of the times! He was able to look around his working space and notice so many details. Even his computer screen has his Zoom showing, with all of his classmates' smiling faces. Beautiful use of observation in your drawing, Mav!

  • Hannah Arnold, grade 1, "Only One You," marker/colored pencil, 9x12 in. "Only One You" is a charming story about being yourself. Students created their own, unique fish using a template. What makes Hannah's artwork stand out is how she gave her fish such a unique personality by giving her fish glasses and creating a colorful environment for her fish to live in.

  • Edmond Nejm, kindergarten, "Pop He'ART,'" oil pastel, 12x12 in. Jim Dine, a contemporary artist, explored color, texture, and composition using a heart as a universal "vehicle" for his explorations. Eddy embraces the exploratory spirit in his work with eye-catching arrangements of colors and emphasis on blending without losing the shape of the heart itself.

  • Lily Lewis, grade 7, "Portrait," oil pastel, 20x16 in. Foundation in creating realistic proportions of the head are included in the 7th grade art program. Afterwards, students use color in findings realistic shades that describe the head. Lily has created a natural head shape and color along with a light background to offset the characteristic features of the head.

  • Rahul Kumar, grade 10, "Radial Flowers," digital print, 13x9 in. Students were asked to create a radial piece of artwork using their own photos, then copying, pasting, reflecting, and flipping them in Photoshop. Subsequent editing and refining is experimented with to create a symmetrical image. Rahul's use of sparse imagery in black and white has created an image evocative of a beautiful drawing in subtle grey tones.
