Run Rabbit

Emery Swirbalus, grade 12, "Run Rabbit," mixed media, 36x36 in. In this arresting portrait, Emery contemplates the dynamic between predator and prey in the wild. She creates a conceptual self-portrait that reverses the role of the rabbit as a confident, threatening aggressor.

  • Bailey Mead, grade 9, "Coil Pot," ceramics, 6x5x5 in. Coil-building is one of the oldest methods of creating ceramic vessels, dating back to prehistoric times. When coil building, there are many challenges to work through, such as rolling even coils, creating symmetry, and making sure the piece can physically stand. If any shortcuts are taken, a coil built pot will crack or crumble. Here, Bailey has passed these hurdles, and created her own take on the coil pot, adding her own twist on a traditional method.

  • Maverick Fox, grade 3, "Observational Drawing," pencil & crayon on paper, 9x12 in. Third grade students were asked to draw from observation. We studied values and practiced using our pencils to shade in order to make objects look three dimensional. Maverick's observation is a true sign of the times! He was able to look around his working space and notice so many details. Even his computer screen has his Zoom showing, with all of his classmates' smiling faces. Beautiful use of observation in your drawing, Mav!

  • Mosbah Tayara, grade 10, "Green Day," digital print, 13x19 in. Students were asked to create an original design for an unmade album of music by an artist. By combining their own photos and artwork (even the lettering was done by hand) through the tools in Photoshop and Illustrator, students explore the art of the album cover. Mosbah's work presents an original and cohesive use of the language of graphic design through his use of layering original imagery, vector-based drawing, and textural overlays.
