Zoe Whelan, grade 10, "Tangled," colored pencil, 12x16 in. This vibrant composition explores the volume and flow of drapery. Zoe uses a warm monochromatic palette to energize the undulating rhythm of the fabric with an almost organic quality.

  • Brooke Bean, grade 3, "Relief Sculpture," crayon & glue on paper, 9x12 in. Brooke used analogous colors, or colors next to each other on the wheel, to help create her sculpture. After carefully coloring both sides of her paper, Brooke cut, folded, frayed, twisted, and curled her paper. She then carefully arranged and attached each of her pieces to a base paper to make her relief sculpture. I'm so proud of Brooke for her beautiful work. This project took time and patience. It's evident Brooke took her time to create such a well crafted piece.

  • Molly Cragan, grade 6, "Trees," watercolor, 16x12 in. Creating distance in watercolor through the application of layers was the idea behind watercolor use. Molly waited for some layers to dry before applying new color. Here, we see distance in Molly's work as the background appears misty which is very realistic and almost looks photographic.

  • Rachel Parry, grade 11, "Flaming Fist of Anger," ceramics, 7x4x5 in. The process of creating a ceramic sculpture can be tricky. Not only does the artist have to have strong technical knowledge to make a sculpture look appealing and physically balanced, but much is left up to chance during the firing and glazing process. During this process, pieces can crack or explode and glaze can run, flake off, or come out differently than expected. In this sculpture, everything went according to plan. This piece is a physical interpretation of the way anger feels. In this sculpture, Rachel represents anger as a fist surrounded by flames of rage.
