Nora Chafouk, grade 1, “Flowers in a Vase,” tempera & oil pastel, 9×12 in.
Celebrating Van Gogh’s birthday, students painted their own flowers in a vase. These flowers in a vase are called a “still life.” Artists used still life arrangements to improve their skills in observation. That being said, the project was simple. Paint a vase full of flowers on a table. Nora has done a tremendous job in creating a vase that looks three-dimensional with a simple arrangement of white flowers, using shading and highlight techniques with oil pastels.
