  • Ainsley Douglas, kindergarten, "Tissue Paper Collage," tissue/cut paper, 9x12 in. A collage is a creative arrangement of materials. Materials can range from paper to photographs to fabric. Using tissue paper, students created colorful arrangements and then covered their collages with a piece of construction paper with cut out shapes mimicking a "stained glass" look. Ainsley embraces the color creation in her choices of tissue paper colors to collage. What really gives the artwork "personality" are the shapes Ainsley cut out from the construction paper.

  • Molly Cragan, grade 6, "Trees," watercolor, 16x12 in. Creating distance in watercolor through the application of layers was the idea behind watercolor use. Molly waited for some layers to dry before applying new color. Here, we see distance in Molly's work as the background appears misty which is very realistic and almost looks photographic.

  • William Sroka, grade 2, "Van Gogh Inspired Sunflower," oil pastel on paper, 9x12 in. Second graders learned about the life and work of Vincent Van Gogh. They were asked to create a drawing inspired by the style of the Dutch painter. First we practiced the shape of an ellipse and vase. Once comfortable with the shapes, students were asked to use oil pastels to create sunflowers inside their vessels. William took a few weeks to carefully craft his artwork. I was so impressed that he took his time to beautifully shade and blend oil pastels together. Nice job!
