Bailey Mead, grade 9, “Coil Pot,” ceramics, 6x5x5 in.
Coil-building is one of the oldest methods of creating ceramic vessels, dating back to prehistoric times. When coil building, there are many challenges to work through, such as rolling even coils, creating symmetry, and making sure the piece can physically stand. If any shortcuts are taken, a coil built pot will crack or crumble. Here, Bailey has passed these hurdles, and created her own take on the coil pot, adding her own twist on a traditional method.
