  • Lauren Plonski, grade 12, "Afraid of the Light," colored pencil & graphite, 14x11 in. This piece combines the artist's knowledge of anatomy with her surreal imagination. Layer 1 consists of a thorough anatomical study of the human skull and ribcage. When adding the second layer of work on the duralar, the piece comes alive with technicolor skulls, shapes, and bubbles juxtaposed with a quickly melting candle sitting on the crown of the original skull reminding the viewer of mortality once the initial excitement over the bright colors and shapes gives way to symbols of lost time and death.

  • Brooke Bean, grade 3, "Relief Sculpture," crayon & glue on paper, 9x12 in. Brooke used analogous colors, or colors next to each other on the wheel, to help create her sculpture. After carefully coloring both sides of her paper, Brooke cut, folded, frayed, twisted, and curled her paper. She then carefully arranged and attached each of her pieces to a base paper to make her relief sculpture. I'm so proud of Brooke for her beautiful work. This project took time and patience. It's evident Brooke took her time to create such a well crafted piece.

  • Luke Murphy, grade 11, "Haunted," digital print, 13x19 in. Students were asked "what haunts you?" and to write a paragraph addressing this idea and make 5 photos that visually communicated their response. Luke's work confronts this inner voice, expressing feelings of failure, self doubt, and a drive to defeat his own fears through long exposure photography.
